The first car to compete at the 2018 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season-opener in Spain has taken the victory lap in qualifying.BMW’s Ariel TDi-V took the first lap of the weekend’s race, which is expected to be held later this month in Punta del Este.
Ariel won its second-ever WeatherTech Championship event at Road Atlanta in January and qualified 10th.
The BMW is the first BMW to make the step up to the premier class.
The TDI car is the fourth in the lineup, after BMW’s R8 LM and BMW’s LM GTE.
The two other BMWs are also in the IMSA ranks, with the BMW M5 LM and the BMW R8 GTE among the other four cars.
BMW is expected on Sunday to announce the 2018 WeatherTech Car of the Year.
